Parallaxed, is less a filmic illustration of my verse, more constructed in the spirit of the subject. It marvels at the magic of the process whilst subverting the very elements of time, focus and framing that photography imposes on a world we know to be illusory.
As the photographer loses his ability to order his own thoughts, so he is left with the remains of memory as a series of captured moments; the very essence of photography itself.
Whilst trawling the internet for 8mm home movies, I came across clips which I thought might work for this piece. On approaching the owner, it was only then that I realised he was actually a schoolfriend of mine from 55 years ago who I hadn't been it touch with in all that time. Some of the film clips I have used were shot by his now deceased father who I never met. A very odd, somewhat synergic coincidence.
I purchased the Leica stills camera at auction in order to film these sequences at 4k, and the child's voice is that of my daughter who would call me up and leave me answer machine messages when she was a child. The remaining footage was shot on my phone over a four year period.
The intro music track, and at the end of the full length version, is by Maria Quinn. I have used a single verse with her kind permission.
The full version is 7 mins in duration. Above is the opening sequence.
As of July 2025, Parallaxed is in consideration for a number of film festivals globally.
